Welte Engineering is a one-man company located in Switzerland. The entire X-Gauge project was developed in my spare time next to my full-time job as an electronics design engineer.
After I bought my smart® & pulse in August 2002, I felt that there were some
additional gauges missing for displaying engine parameters like turbo pressure
or battery voltage. Initially I thought of adding some analog instruments,
but when I was facing all the problems of gauge and sensor installation, it came
to mind that all interesting engine data is already available through the car's
on-board diagnostic interface. It just needed to be retrieved and displayed.
The idea of utilizing the housing of the cockpit clock for this purpose was almost
obvious since this took care of many design challenges like professional appearance,
easy wiring and two-button user interface. Although, I do prefer analog instruments
in a car, presenting up to seven engine parameters within a single physical gauge
can only be done with a digital display.
